Match Report

Cheddar 2nds were keen to give a good account of themselves in their fixture against Mendip 3rds- both teams having gained promotion last season. A vigorous warm up session set them up from the start as Mendips keeper barely had time to settle before she was called on to make 2 good saves and followed by a shot hitting her post. Quick thinking by captain Julie Callow at a free hit caught Mendip napping. Karen Stanley picked up on the pass to score and put Cheddar 1-0 up. Mendip were backing off at free hits and when Cheddar were awarded another Sian Snelgrove seized her chance to carry the ball before slipping to Grace White to get on the score sheet. A family combination saw Jo White make a surging run down the right. Her accurate cross found daughter Grace on the far post to give Cheddar a 3-0 half time lead. It was important for the home team to keep up the momentum in the 2nd half in case goal difference came into play at the end of the season. With this in mind Cheddar used the rotation of the squad to good effect and kept Mendip on the defence. Stanley scored her 2nd with an assist from Grace White. Millie Stoyles came on and immediately had an impact- a well timed interception setting up White for her hat trick. Fresh legs in midfield saw Nicky Baines and Maggie Hammond replace the hard working Jacky Farley and Sian Snelgrove. Hammond in particular showed how much she has improved over the season with some good positional support play and passing. Jo Teagle had a shot cleared off the line before she then got on the score sheet- Stoyles drew the keeper out of position before slipping the ball to Teagle to give Cheddar a 6-0 win. Mendip had very few attacking opportunities but when they did break through they found Cheddar's defence determined to keep a clean sheet. Good communication and positioning by them gave their keeper a 'quiet ' afternoon
